Popis: This chapter outlines the state of renewable energy research and development, as well as energy sustainability initiatives across government, industrial, and societal sectors in Canada. First, it examines the conservation and energy efficiency initiatives already in place in Canada, whether as a result of government policy or through widespread nongovernmental organizations’ campaigns; in the context of these initiatives, possible improvements and areas where current approaches are lacking are discussed. Second, in light of these required improvements, this chapter reviews the renewable energy resources developed in Canada and ongoing scientific research in green technology. Whenever possible, case studies are used to contextualize the benefits and shortcomings of these technologies. Third, this chapter looks to the future and endeavors to give an outlook for completely sustainable communities that are adaptable, versatile, and “off-grid.” Once again, through the use of case studies of existing communities that emulate these principles, the relationship among local government, federal institutions, industries, and citizens must be to achieve the sustainable communities’ goal is examined.
