Popis: | To test possible effects of concanavalin A (con A) on the phagocytosis of the rod outer segments by the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE), we injected 0.3 mg con A into the vitreous body of adult rats. Untreated eyes, as well as eyes injected with isotonic saline, served as controls. The eyes were enucleated at 4, 24, 48, an 72 h after the con A administration. In the eyes enucleated at 24 h after injection of con A, a dramatic increase in the number of large phagosomes in the RPE was found by light and electron microscopy through all parts of the retinas. After 72 h, the number of phagosomes had reverted to normal. The study indicates that con A may increase the phagocytosis and/or inhibit the degradation of rod outer segment material in the RPE. Potentially, this may be of value in the continued research of the photoreceptor degradation and renewal processes in experimental animal models. |
