The non-destructive technique, soft X-ray radiography, is used to assess the condition of conserved germplasm of six halophytic species ofLimoniumendemic to the Iberian Peninsula, some of them endangered. The radiography test allowed morphological examination of conserved units and identification of well developed seeds. The number of seeds found in the samples was low, suggesting that the rate of seed formation in these species is also low. However, the germination ability in all cases was very high (ranging between 90 and 100%). Taking into consideration that germplasm samples contain a high proportion of bracts and flower remains, together with the small seed size and the low rate of seed formation, it seems advisable to check collected material in order to guarantee the reproductive potential of the units. The non-destructive character of X-ray radiography makes it a suitable method for the assessment of material of great value only available in limited quantities. |
