Popis: A “sentinel-type” radiation detection device was developed to provide time stamped records of exposure to rapid pulses of X or gamma radiation. Radiation is detected by a CsI(Tl) scintillation crystal. Visible light generated in the scintillator is transmitted to a photographic film through a moving aperture in a mercury micro-coulometer and time reference scale to record the time of exposure. The detector responds satisfactorily to radiation pulses ranging from ∼ 0.2 to ∼ 50 mR with time durations from several nsec to several min. Full-scale timing intervals can be adjusted from a few hours to several months. Exposure records can be read to within 0.1% of the full-scale timing interval.
