Condylar fracture and soft tissue injuries to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the commonly encountered mandibular injury. These injuries are usually overlooked and least diagnosed. Fracture of the condyle may be caused by direct or indirect trauma to the TMJ apparatus. Soft tissue injuries to the joint apparatus should also be evaluated for arriving at an appropriate diagnosis and to prevent resultant complications that may include disturbed jaw function, internal derangement of the joint, ankylosis and mandibular growth disturbance leading to hypoplasia. All patients with trauma to the temporomandibular joint should be evaluated periodically and followed up closely for any preceding joint derangements. This chapter highlights the clinically valid classifications, diagnostic methods and treatment guidelines for the management of the temporomandibular joint trauma. |
