Popis: HERPES SIMPLEX VIRUS Perinatal herpes infection is an increasing concern among women of reproductive age. Approximately 5% of the general population has been diagnosed with genital herpes, but approximately 20% to 30% of women may have been infected with herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV 2),lo7 the serotype responsible for approximately 85% of cases of genital herpes infections.12 It is estimated that there are more than 500,000 new cases diagnosed each year in the United Statesz5 and that more than 30 million people are infected.I2 Although AIDS has replaced HSV infection as the most feared sexually transmitted disease, women with genital herpes often experience a great deal of guilt and fear because of the potential devastation the infection may cause in their newborn infants.
