In many environments, advanced ceramics and glasses demonstrate exceptional stability of properties, often for long times. However, there are also, environments that can cause degradation of some of these materials. This chapter will examine case studies of selected ceramics in several aggressive environments: water (including sea water); the human body; high temperature combustion gases: and finally, high energy plasmas. Included are: degradation of yttria-transformation toughened zirconia; effect of body fluids on bioceramics; effect of combustion products on the strength of SiC and Si3N4 for gas turbine application; and effect of high energy plasma on BN-SiO2 space propulsion thrusters. Comments on structuring R&D programs to detect potential degradation, and information on available literature and standards, are included. |
