Popis: | This paper discusses how life cycle costing is used in evaluating alternative bridge designs and discusses the various costs that need to be included in the analysis. The paper highlights the importance of including traffic delay costs and shows how these costs swamp all other costs on highly trafficked roads. The paper shows the effect of varying discount factor by use of an example of total life costs for two alternative bridge designs. Examples are given of how better quality construction with increased first cost can lead to lower total life costs on roads with traffic flows greater than 20,000 vehicles per day. (A) |
