The genomes of pea, field-pea, lentil, faba bean, chickpea and lupin are compared in relation to size, level of polymorphism and arrangement of genes on the respective linkage maps. Lupin is quite distinct, as its distant phylogenetic relationship would indicate. Chickpea possesses a significantly smaller genome than the members of the Viceae and appears to display less polymorphism at the molecular level. However, examination of the linkage maps available for pea, lentil, faba bean and chickpea indicate that many loci linked in pea also exhibit linkage in the other pulse crops. The extent of conservation of linkage arrangements may be as much as 40% of the genome, suggesting that gene locations in one pulse crop are often easily transferable to the other crops and permitting a generalized linkage map to be constructed for these pulse crops. |
