Dietary Intake and Iron Status of 3 and 4 Year Old Hispanic, Black, and White Children

Popis: LEARNING OUTCOME: To assess the dietary intake and iron status of 3 and 4 year old children participating in the special supplemental food program for women, infants and children (WIC). Retrospective data from 875 records of children participating in a WIC clinic during 1994 were analyzed to determine if selected personal and health variables were associated with their dietary intake and iron status. Analysis of variance, Duncan's Multiple Range Test, t-test, Chi-square and scattergrams were used to test the hypotheses. Fifty-four percent of the children were four year olds, while 46% (N=403) were three year olds. Hispanics comprised 71%, Blacks, 15% and Whites, 14% of the population. Fifty one percent were females and 49% were males. The majority of the children were between the 5th and 95th percentiles of the National Center for Health Statistics for height and weight. Most of the children (63%) had hematocrits of 34.5% to 40%. Only 24% had hematocrits of 34% and under which was considered high nutrition risk in the state where the clinic was located. Almost 80% consumed 3 meals/day, while 41 % consumed 2 snacks/day. Black children consumed significantly more protein and bread items, fruits, vegetables, and sweetened beverages, and less of dairy products than the other groups.
