Voles are small rodent species with intriguing social behavior. While some species like montane and meadow voles are highly promiscuous, closely related prairie voles are monogamous. Studies in voles have shown that oxytocin in females and vasopressin in males are the most important mediators of monogamous or polygamous behavior. Blocking vasopressin action in prairie vole males prevent their attachment to the female. On the other hand, overexpression of the vasopressin receptor in the ventral pallidum changes polygamous meadow voles into monogamous males. |
