Our previous research demonstrated that individuals deduce another person’s expertise related to an object from the spatial distance between the person and the object: The expertise of an individual spatially close to an object is rated to be higher in comparison to an individual spatially distant from the respective object. Numerous studies have demonstrated that a person who is ascribed with expertise exerts greater influence on recipients than laypersons (e.g., Bohner et al., 2002; Chaiken & Maheswaran, 1994; Hovland et al., 1953; Petty et al., 1981). Therefore, a person in spatial proximity to the attitude object should be perceived as an expert in relation to attitude object and affect recipient’s attitudes toward the attitude object to a greater extent than a person in great spatial distance to the attitude object. |
