A study has been made of mobile elements in artificial heart valves made from dimethylvinylmethylsiloxane rubber. The investigation was carried out both with the original valves and with those that had been in contact with the blood during a period of operation of up to 5 years in the human body. The sorption of distilled water and of the blood serum by materials in the mobile elements was investigated, and the surface of the mobile elements was examined by electron microscopy and by IR analysis. It was concluded in the light of the results that diffusion of the main component of the blood in terms of its content (water) is the process mainly responsible for structural changes in the material. Adsorption of the organic (albuminous) part of the blood is insignificant, and is limited to the surface of the material. Heterogeneity of the polymeric material develops through water diffusing through the mobile element material and forming globules in the polymeric matrix. It was found that low molecular compounds extracted from the material of the mobile element in the artificial heart valve pass into the liquid medium with which it is in contact. |
