Popis: The design of a long-term experiment to compare the biological effects of five radionuclides in adult beagles is presented. The goal is to obtain correlations between long-term biological effects and the radiation dose rates or some function thereof. The biological effects which are being studied and the accompanying dosimetric studies are described, and the methods which are being employed are summarized. A brief summary of the results of the first ten years of the long-term studies is presented. In general, the important biological end points observed in the dogs are quite comparable to those observed in human beings exposed to Ra/sup 226/ and Ra/sup 228/. A more quantitative comparison, in terms of times required for onset of effect and radiation doses to produce an effect, has not been made because of the incompleteness of the studies presented. Many dogs are still living, and some have not yet been rejected. It is anticipated that the forthcoming results of these studies will provide a firmer scientific basis for the estimation of maximum permissible levels of these radionuclides as industrial hazards. Since study and evaluation of effects of long-term internal irradiation in the dog require a large control dog population as a framemore » of reference, these studies will also provide a detailed picture of aging in the dog.« less
