In 1957 the United States Congress established a cooperative Federal-State program which had as its objective the control and containment of the imported fire ant, Solenopsis saevissima richteri Forel, within the limits of its distribution at that time. Long-lasting insecticides (heptachlor and dieldrin) were used in the early stages of the campaign, but the development of mirex bait (Lofgren et al. 1963, 1964; Stringer et al. 1964) and its adoption as the standard control in the early 1960's eliminated the need for these insecticides in the large-scale control program. |
