Popis: Scope: There is a lack of a national organized screening program for colorectal cancer in Greece and asymptomatic detection is applied to an opportunistic fashion. The collection of epidemiologic endoscopic data from the population of interest would provide valuable information for the implementation of health policies especially during periods of economic austerity. Questions to be answered: The prevalence of polyps, adenomas, advanced adenomas and cancer in asymptomatic, average-risk individuals The number, location, size, morphology and histology of polyps will be examined Comparison between different age groups regarding prevalence and characteristics of lesions (t-test, X2, one-way anova ) Number needed to screen (NNS) to locate an adenoma with colonoscopy will be estimated Risk factors for the identification of an adenoma will be examined by regression model (regression analysis) Patients: Eligible patients have been included in the hospital’s endoscopic and histologic database and fulfilling the inclusion criteria namely: asymptomatic, average-risk individuals presented for colorectal cancer screening for the first time at the outpatient endoscopy department of a tertiary general hospital during one year Methods: All eligible patients provide informed consent according to Helsinki declaration and its amendements. The patient is subjected to colonoscopy according to routine endoscopic methods In case polyps are encountered, the patient is subjected to polypectomy Basic epidemiological, endoscopic and histologic data are included in the patient’s report Analysis: The burden of disease concerning colorectal cancer and precancerous lesions in a sample of the general population that has been collected from a tertiary hospital The collection of descriptive and analytic epidemiological data for the future programming of public health initiatives There is a scarcity of published studies concerning colorectal cancer screening in Greece
