Popis: There is a substantive lack of evidence concerning how best to structure healthcare, systems of care, and treatment modalities for people with intellectual disabilities (PID).1-3 Due to this lack of an effective structure, PID face unique challenges related to obtaining health-related services. There is a substantial gap in epidemiological data about substance use among PID compared to their non-disabled counterparts, and this gap is even more evident in the United States. Individuals with intellectual disabilities who use substances have a potentially higher risk of developing substance use disorder and increased likelihood of problematic use.4-10 A major obstacle to mitigating this gap is the lack of a validated way to screen patients with intellectual disabilities in primary care for risk of problematic substance use. To address this problem, we will develop an adaptive substance use screening tool and examine the feasibility and acceptability of this adaptive drug screening tool. We will assess the feasibility of a obtaining a biomarker drug test from PID for provide insight to future studies (R01) to test the reliability and validity of the tool. This will be the first attempt to create an adaptive substance use screening tool for use by healthcare professionals.
