Popis: The MWD and composition of oligomers from alkylation of toluene with epichlorohydrin in the presence of boron trifluoride etherate have been investigated. With the aid of two-detector gel chromatographic analysis it was found that along with epichlorohydrin macromolecules containing toluene units there is also epichlorohydrin homopolymer, the amount of the latter depending on the reaction conditions, particularly on temperature and on the catalyst concentration. At 273 K only epichlorohydrin oligomers with MW 300–400 are formed, while at 333 K alkylated macromolecules are formed with Mn 1400–1700. The polydispersity of the alkylation products, not counting the epichlorohydrin homopolymer fractions falls within the narrow limits of MwMn = 1.2–1.4. Dehydrochlorination of the oligomer products in the presence of an alkali results in the formation of epoxy-containing oligomers with a functionality of 2.0–2.3.
