Summarises recent research on the environment which indicates that forest clearance and agricultural expansion in Cumbria and north Lancashire began before Roman control was established, although the arrival of the Romans acted as a catalyst for further expansion. This appears to have initiated large-scale erosion and gullying in some upland areas.
