A theory of collective motion in liquids is described. This theory is based upon a new approximation which may be regarded as either a generalization of the random phase approximation or, alternatively, as a generalization of the phonon theory of solids. The theory is applied to predict the form of the inelastic coherent neutron scattering from liquids making use of a particular model. Other applications, to the theory of amorphous solids, hot crystals, electron plasmas, etc., are indicated. |
