The process of globalisation has led to the development of mega-city regions (MCRs), a new type of urban form containing a number of physically separate but functionally networked cities. Taking the Pearl River Delta as a case study, this study examines the linkages of producer services which have become important processes underlying the formation and development of China’s emerging MCRs. The main findings of this study include: (1) Producer services have emerged as a powerful dynamic reshaping regional spatial structure and functional connections of the Chinese MCRs. (2) To provide a better understanding of the regional connectivity of MCRs, intra-firm office connections as well as inter-firms linkages of producer services should be taken into account. (3) In a manner different from manufacturing activities, producer services linkages bind the cities of the MCR into a hierarchical and localised regional system. |
