The report presents the results of research carried out by Witham Archaeology in relation to the site of proposed residential development of land south of Bakers Close and west of Newton Lane in the village of Turvey in the administrative district of Bedford Borough Council. The report, commissioned by Francis Jackson Homes, will form part of a submission for residential development of the site. The area of the proposed development is an 'L'-shaped parcel of land of approximately 1.49ha comprising two fields around the southern and western sides of existing residential development along Bakers Close. The land is currently managed as amenity grassland in the grounds of the existing dwelling to the north-west. The research indicates low potential for significant archaeological remains to survive within the boundaries of the proposed development. The project has revealed heritage assets of Prehistoric, Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon, Medieval and Post-medieval date within the 1km search radius, but there are no existing records of significant archaeological finds in the immediate vicinity of the site. More significantly, any archaeological remains which may have been present are likely to have been removed from over most of the site area during quarrying operations in the 19th century. Comparison of the location of the proposed development site with those of known heritage assets in the core of the village indicates that development should have a negligible impact on the setting of those assets, particularly regarding Turvey Bridge, a designated Scheduled Monument. The existing built environment and mature tree cover effectively screen the development area from the existing heritage assets of the village. |
