Kindergarten teachers' conceptions about nature and the environment

Popis: | This study was carried out within the framework of environmental education (EE) and its object was the recording, categorization and interpretation of kindergarten teachers' conceptions about two basic concepts: nature and the environment, which are key concepts of environmental education. The study involved the participation of 110 public kindergarten teachers in the area of Athens. The results of the investigation showed that (a) the dominant conception of the participants concerning nature is naturalistic, simplistic, restricted, and enriched with romantic elements; (b) the dominant conception concerning the environment focuses on biophysical dimensions and there is a complete absence of its complexity and its multidimensional character, the global and the systemic consideration; (c) half of the kindergarten teachers think that the concept of environment is identical with that of nature, while in a few cases we locate a conceptual confusion; (d) the in-service training programs and implementation of EE... |
