Substituent and solvent effects on electronic absorption spectra and thermal isomerization of push-pull-substituted cis-azobenzenes

Popis: The electronic absorption spectra of push-pull-substituted cis-azobenzenes were measured using a newly devised spectroscopic method. The solvent effect on the absorption spectra of cis-4-anilino-4'-nitroazobenzene is interpreted in terms of a structural change involving the N-N-C angle. The results support an inversion mechanism for cis-trans isomenzation, rather than a rotational one.
