Exchange interactions between the Er3+ ions and the ferrimagnetically ordered Fe3+ ions in ErIG have been observed by F.I.R. Zeeman spectroscopy. The ground state splittings in the [001] direction for the two magnetically inequivalent Er3+ sites are found to be 18.2 and 32.2cm−1 at 4.2°K. Some contribution to the observed slopes has been shown to arise from demagnetising fields. However, the observed level shifts are rather lower than those deduced from optical spectra. Such effects are possible because of the comparability of crystal field and exchange splittings. Because of this, a full understanding of the spectra will require simultaneous fitting of crystal field and exchange parameters. Unambiguous evidence of the interaction of local excitations and phonon modes has been observed for the first time in these spectra. |
