Popis: Rhizobiumleguminosarum RBL 1 shows autagglutination in batch culture on several media. Cell clustering appears characteristically at two growth stages: end lag-phase and, particularly, end log-phase. In a yeast extract/mannitol medium the end log-phase autagglutination could be prevented by addition of 0.2 M mannose; glucose, galactose and mannitol were inactive (Kijne et al. 1983). This interesting observation led us to a more detailed study of autagglutination in a defined medium, in view of a possible role of this clustering behaviour in sugar-specific attachment of Rhizobium to legume root hairs.
