Summary A controlled method of coronary arteriography was used to assess the effect of temporary modifications of the circulation upon coronary opacification. Some improvement in coronary opacification was apparent following decrease of the heart rate, reduction of the venous return to the heart and partial obstruction of the left ventricular ejection in a limited number of experiments. The variations obtained with these modifications were slight and were scarcely more than the variations observed in consecutive control injections. Nitroglycerin and amyl nitrite consistently produced dilatation and improved visualization of normal coronary arteries. Vasodilatation was also apparent beyond the site of induced, partial occlusion of a major branch of a coronary artery. The use of vasodilating drugs may be a useful adjunct to the technique of coronary arteriography. Coronary arteriography is suggested as a method for pharmacologic investigation of vasodilating drugs. |
