This article stresses the usefulness of thermodynamics and thermodynamic data bases in the scope of physics, chemistry and biology, either for applied work carried out by engineers (then, mainly interested by classical thermodynamics) or for research work carried out by academic scientists (then also interested by statistical and non-equilibrium thermodynamics). The conceptual beauty, novelty and generality of thermodynamics is illustrated by a number of examples showing the basic, essential role of thermodynamics in our understanding of physics and chemistry. |
