Light and Heavy Television Viewers: their pictures in the public mind

Popis: It is not difficult to find stereotypes, or ideas about personal characteristics, of the heavy television viewer. It is a symptom of the culture that there is much less, if any, attention or stereotype attached to the particularly light viewer. A survey amongst over 2500 respondents in BARB's Television Opinion Panel asked them to say how much they agreed or disagreed that each of 12 descriptions applied for heavy or for light viewers. Six scales were positive and referred to intellectual abilities and achievements; six scales were negative and dealt with various attitudes and behaviours. It is clear that these characteristics are felt to apply in different ways to heavy and light viewers; but differences also depend on the perceived age of viewers.
