Popis: | Research efforts toward development of a male contraceptive agent have proceeded in two general directions. Early studies dealt with agents having a direct effect on the seminiferous tubule. A number of compounds, notably the nitrofurans and diamines, were investigated, but all were found to have undesirable side-effects or a narrow and unacceptable therapeutic index. Recent efforts, primarily in the People’s Republic of China, have utilized gossypol as an antifertility agent. Initial optimistic reports by the Chinese (National Coordinating Group on Male Antifertility Agents, 1978) have not yet been confirmed; current studies are designed to provide the answer to gossypol’s contraceptive potential. |
