The heart of the power system is the protection coordination. It is important that an electrical fault must be cleared within a short period of time in order to ensure quality and reliable operation. This can only be achieved by properly coordinated protective equipment such as circuit breakers and/or relays. In this research study, the researcher focuses on the protection coordination system of a 2000kVA – Low Voltage (LV) Panel 5 of student dormitory in university area located at Al Khoud, Oman. Protective device will be critically reviewed if it is based on local and international standards like the Authority for Electricity Regulation – Oman Electrical Standards (AER-OES) and Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering (IEEE) or British Standard (BS). A single line diagram of the 2000kVA – LV Panel 5 of student dormitory was taken into account and studied. Symmetrical and unsymmetrical magnitude of fault currents were determined at different locations using per unit method which is essential in determining the minimum Kilo Ampere Interrupting Capacity (kAIC) rating of circuit breaker at different fault locations; a pre-requisite in studying the distribution system if its protective device were properly coordinated. The researcher will ensure its effective coordination base on the data obtained and will graphically present its time-current curve (TCC) using ABB software. |
