Popis: Grinding is the usual process employed to finish advanced ceramics. Methodology is presented for conventional grinding machines to provide maximum strength in the ground ceramic while at the same time providing highest finish grinding removal rate. Guidelines in the form of tables are presented for efficient high strength grinding of hot pressed silicon nitride ceramic. The tables give guidelines for wheel downfeed to achieve maximum strength grinding for specific sets of wheel diameter, wheel speed, workspeed, and wheel grit size. The tables also provide maximum specific material removal rate values for each set of wheel diameter, wheel speed, and wheel grit size. Results are based on experimental grinding research and strength testing. A procedure is presented for applying the methodology for efficient high strength finish grinding to other structural ceramics.
