If engaged art history is to grow into an enduring practice, it should blend the discipline of art history with the powerful foundation of public scholarship theory and practice that has already been developed, tested, critiqued, and revised by those in other fields. To support that process, this chapter proposes a theoretical and practical framework for engaged art history that is anchored in scholarship outside of the discipline. It articulates key characteristics of public scholarship in art history as well as specific approaches that publicly engaged art historians can incorporate into their work. A selective literature review with a particular emphasis on sources from anthropology and history provides a manageable introduction to the vast body of interdisciplinary work on engaged scholarship. |
