Summary The perioperative setting is a complex environment in which critical events happen without warning and can quickly become life threatening. Clinical decision-making is the process by which a physician uses prior knowledge, reason, and the clinical scenario to formulate a diagnosis or treatment plan. Although this is usually an intuitive process, bias and cognitive errors may result in an incorrect course of action. Cognitive errors, which are "thinking mistakes", may be responsible for a large number of clinical errors, and cognitive forcing tools may help physicians to detect them and mitigate their effects. |
