Popis: The stability of rock masses is important in the planning, construction, and exploitation of underground structures. Several attempts have been made to assess stability. They have been based mainly on information from visual observations of the behavior of the rock when minerals are extracted from it. In recent years instrumental methods have been developed for detecting indirect signs of instability. These methods of assessing the stability of the rocks enable us to solve certain problems in mining. With the development of dilatometric apparatus for probing rocks via a borehole, it has become possible to develop a method of assessing the stability of the rocks by making a combined assessment of the constitution, structure, state of stress, and strength of the rocks and by transforming these indices in time and space. The starting-point is a deformation map for a pulsating cycle, obtained by probing boreholes with hydraulic transducers. The most stable branch of this map is that for restitution of deformations on successive decrease of pressure on the borehole surface, which can be used to analyze the deformability of the coals from a minimal number of experimental data, provided the experimental results are sufficiently accurate. On the whole, this method ofmore » assessing stabiliuty is fairly effective, involves only simple experiments, and requires minimal costs of training in the experimental technique. The apparatus, which consists of a hydraulic gauge, a manometer, a hand pump, and a very simple flowmeter (measurement tube), is cheap and can be recommended for wide use in estimating the stability of rock exposures by geological and survey teams in pits.« less
