The decorative house-painting of the Transbaikal Old Believers (Semeis) (a) is distinctive in nature and complex in origin, as is the very history of the appearance of the Semeis east of Lake Baikal. (1) In addition to features unique to this style of painting, it also has many traits (its patterns and their component elements, and the technique employed) in common with that of the Russians of the Altai, in the first place, with that found along the Volga and in the North, and even, to some degree, with Ukrainian house-painting. To explain the interconnections of this type of folk art and the full range of its sources is a difficult task, as it has been quite inadequately studied. |
