Popis: In clinical diagnostics, monitoring of food-borne pathogens to enable detection of biological warfare agents remains a pressing issue in the rapid detection and identification of microorganisms. We require faster, more accurate diagnoses to reduce healthcare costs significantly; doing this includes providing simultaneously a better epidemiological data that can be used for infectious disease modeling. The present chapter provides a comprehensive overview of current and developing microfluidics-based technologies to monitor, detect, and characterize biothreats agents for both civilian and military biodefense. The chapter also attempts to discuss micro-scale sample preparation methods, including integrated lab-on-a-chip systems based on immunoassays.
