Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), which occur as characteristic contaminants at former coal gasification plants, are hazardous because of their carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. The bioremediation of PAH-contaminated soil often is limited by the low water solubility and dissolution rate of the polynuclear hydrocarbons. Recently, it has been demonstrated that surfactants of the alkylphenolethoxylate type enhance the bioavailability of PAH in shaking cultures. Solubilized PAH were metabolized with exponential kinetics and the degradation of the crystalline hydrocarbons was enhanced after the addition of nontoxic surfactants (Tiehm, 1994; Tiehm and Fritzsche, 1995). |
