Objective: Determining the spiritual care needs in the pre-operative period is important in terms of accelerating the healing process. For this reason, this study was conducted to determine the preoperative spiritual care needs of patients who will undergo orthopedic surgery. Methods: The sample of the descriptive study consisted of 144 patients who were hospitalized in the orthopedics and traumatology clinic for planned surgery in a training and research hospital in Izmir between August and December 2021. The data of the study were collected one day before the surgery using the "Spiritual Care Needs Inventory". In order to conduct the study, written permission was obtained from the Non-Interventional Clinical Research Ethics Committee of a university, the relevant hospital and the patients. Results: It was determined that the mean age of the patients included in the study was 57.06±18.87 (min:19, max:89) years and 53.5% (n:77) were women. In this study, it was determined that the mean score of the Spiritual Care Needs Inventory of the patients was 60.5±12.0 (min: 21 max: 89); the mean scores of "meaning and hope" and "caring and respect", which are the sub-dimensions of the scale, were 34.5±7.9 (min:13, max:54) and 26.1±5.1 (min:8, max:38) points, respectively. Conclusion: As a result, in this study, it was determined that the spiritual care needs of the patients before orthopedic surgery were above the medium level. It is recommended that nurses monitor and support patients undergoing orthopedic surgery in terms of their spiritual care needs. |
