Popis: | In pregnant rats on day 7, 10, or 11 (day 1= insemination), the conceptuses in each rat's uterus were adjusted to a desired number,i.e. zero, one, two, three, four, five, or full complement, by aspirating the undesired conceptuses; aspiration between adjacent conceptuses served as a control procedure. On day 12, each rat was hypophysectomized and hysterectomized, then injected daily with either 100 μg of 17β-estradiol (E100) sc in sesame oil or sesame oil alone from days 12–16. Serial peripheral blood samples (days 7–17) were collected and assayed for their serum progesterone content, and the corpora lutea were weighed at autopsy on day 17. Among the rats in which the conceptus number was adjusted on day 7, progesterone levels up to day 12 were unrelated to conceptus number, except that the values in the zero-conceptus group fell precipitously after day 10 and in the full complement group were very slightly higher on day 12 than in the other pregnant rats. In the oil-treated groups, the progesterone level... |
