The lacrimal drainage system includes upper and lower punctum, canaliculi, lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct (Fig. 2.1). It is divided into upper and lower parts. The upper part of the lacrimal drainage system includes lacrimal puncta, upper and lower canaliculi and common canaliculus and is lined with stratified cuboidal epithelium [1]. The lower lacrimal system comprises of the lacrimal sac and nasolacrimal duct (NLD). It is lined by double-layered columnar epithelium [1]. Knowledge of the anatomy of the nasal structures and bony lacrimal fossa is crucial to a successful lacrimal sac procedure. A thorough understanding of the anatomy of the lacrimal drainage system facilitates a successful surgical outcome. |
