Popis: | Sn (001) surfaces, cleaned by ion bombardment are studied by LEED and AES have been found to form terraces with steps both up and down along the (10) and (01) directions of the square net. The terrace structure is stable over the temperature range 115K to 473K. Measurements from LEED patterns indicate a step height of c/2 and terrace separation of a/2 in terms of bulk unit cell dimensions. The experimental diffraction patterns were compared with simulated patterns obtained from three model terrace structures using kinematic theory. The closest approximation to the real patterns is given by the model with three atoms per terrace. |
