Popis: | Substituted diphenyl ethers are important commercial herbicides whose mode of action is not completely understood. It has been suggested that these compounds owe their herbicidal properties to the dark and light accumulation of protoporphyrin IX, which in the light is believed to photosensitize the formation of destructive singlet oxygen. In this work it is shown that treatment of intact seedlings at field rate with acifluorfen-Na resulted in a modest level of tetrapyrrole accumulation in darkness. The nature of the accumulated tetrapyrrole depended on the plant species. This dark induction of tetrapyrrole accumulation did not appear, however, to be responsible for photodynamic injury in the light. This conclusion is mainly based on the observation that when acifluorfen-Na sprays are applied to intact seedlings in darkness, no correlation is observed between tetrapyrrole accumulation that takes place during the dark incubation period and photodynamic damage that takes place when the treated plants are exposed to light. |
