Popis: Studies were done on the thermal reaction of pentachlorophenol and its sodium, lithium and potassium salts. Thermal reactions were characterized using isothermal and dynamic thermogravimetry and a variety of chemical analysis techniques. Large differences were observed between pentachlorophenol and different pentachlorophenate salts. Oxygen and various levels of bases had little effect on the thermal reaction. The yield of octachlorodibenzo- p -dioxin varies depending on the type of inorganic ion and the temperature. The other major product was a polymer formed by condensation of the initial starting material (phenol), an intermediate, or the final product (dioxin). Preliminary evidence indicated it was very similar to the structure of octachlorodibenzo- p -dioxin.
