A model for mesothelioma mortality, proposed by PETO et al., (1982), described the death rate as proportional to the 3.2th power of time since first exposure to asbestos. The model has been fitted to the mortality experience of workers in HM Naval Bases in England. The best estimate of the power parameter, 3.14, is very close but the constant of proportionality is very much lower than that for the North American insulation workers analysed by PETO et al. The model fitted the data adequately with no significant differences between the three dockyards, Devonport, Chatham and Portsmouth. |
