Popis: Polycrystalline (Fe/Pd) n multilayers were grown on to sapphire substrates at room temperature in an ultrahigh-vacuum system. Structural properties were studied ex situ by X-ray diffraction at large angles and analysed with the program SUPREX. Magnetic measurements were carried out for temperatures between 4.2 and 300 K using a superconducting quantum interface device magnetometer. For (Fe/Pd) n multilayers with Fe layer thicknesses larger than about 2.5 nm we obtain interplanar distances d Fe = 2.03 ± 0.01 A corresponding to the lattice spacing for (110) planes of bcc Fe. For these (Fe/Pd) n multilayers we find at T = 4.2 K that the magnetic moment per Fe atom is μ = 2.2μ B ± 0.1μ B . For Fe layer thicknesses less than about 2.5 nm the interplanar distance is d Fe = 2.1 ± 0.01 A and the magnetic moment per Fe atom is μ = 2.7μ B ± 0.1μ B . We show that the occurrence of the large magnetic moment originates from the fact that fcc Fe is in the high-spin state rather than from the polarization effects of Pd at Fe-Pd interfaces.
