The Rohingya crisis is a grave concern for Bangladesh. The bilateral initiatives with Myanmar have not been effective in dealing with peaceful and sustainable repatriation of Rohingyas, mostly because of the indifferent attitude of the Government of Myanmar and economic and geopolitical interests of regional powers. This study argues that despite the presence of all the evidence of ethnic conflict, this crisis is no longer limited to an internal issue of a nation-state. The Rohingya issue manifests the contentious role of geopolitics, ignoring humanity at the cost of economic and strategic gains of regional powers. The objective of this chapter is to analyze how and why the geopolitical dimensions have superseded the humanitarian aspects of the Rohingya community. The study focuses mainly on the role of regional powers, for example, China and India, in addressing this refugee problem. The Rohingya crisis is a complicated humanitarian and geopolitical concern. Therefore, the governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar and international agencies need to ensure that a proper balance is maintained between the humanitarian concerns and the geopolitical interests of regional and global powers while formulating a practical strategy for sustainable solutions of this age-old humanitarian disaster. |
