This chapter offers encouraging evidence of the potential for aspirations to become tangible reality. It highlights collaborative musical interventions among both like-minded people and adversaries. Countries like Venezuela, the United States, Estonia and South Africa describe musical interventions among like-minded people, in order to reveal how music can bring people together from multiple cultures that are publicly perceived to be enemies. In many circumstances, musical interventions, and their direct participants, have inspired the broader community. El Sistema offers young people quality music education along with the individual discipline and community values that come with ensemble music-making. The chapter conducts research to study an arts-based approach to learning how to achieve desired outcomes in solving problems and resolving disputed situations. It presents a range of music-based societal interventions that highlight the hope that the dynamics of music and ensemble music-making are robust enough to transform both major and day-to-day organizational and societal dysfunction. |
