The MRT line 1 is the first tunnel project using Earth Pressure Balance Shield Machine (EPB shield) in Viet Nam. Being constructed beneath highly populated area and existing buildings, the construction of this MRT line can cause ground movement and damage to existing structures. The tunnel-induced settlement therefore becomes a key issue in the planning process. In this paper, the characteristics of ground surface settlement caused by a twin tunnel in MRT line 1 HCM City were presented. The transverse ground movement at nine sections were back analyzed using the superposition technique in the empirical method, and the finite element analysis. It was found that the ground surface settlement trough of twin tunnel could be reliably predicted using both methods. Good agreement is achieved among these methods and can be used to estimate the ground settlement for other MRT lines in HCM City in the future. |
