The 48-week USAF Test Pilot School (TPS) curriculum in performance, flying qualities, systems, and test management culminates in a real -world flight test program under the mentorship of TPS staff. Two Test Management Projects (TMPs) are presented as examples of these student-led flight test programs. Project ACTIVE FIN examined the effectiveness of closed loop digital control of piezoelectric actuators in alleviating buffet induced vibrations on an F-16 Block 15 ventral fin caused by airstream disturbances from the wake of a Low Altitude Navigation and Tracking Infrared for Night (LANTIRN) pod and the landing gear. Project HAVE KNOTS determined the data consistency of the cloverleaf flight test technique, and variations, for pitot-static system calibration. |
